This two-part dance film is set in Detroit and the otherworldly recesses of 27 year old Kofa's mind. Her journey unfolds through Dunham technique--an American modern dance tradition--and amidst the distinctive visual culture of her fast changing hometown.
The work investigates connections between today’s popular trends and their roots in African and Indigenous cultures around the world, and posits Black dance as technology for time and space travel.
Afrofuturepast is being produced in collaboration with Curator Honey Cross and Photographer China Leona Moore. I have also partnered with the Institute for Dunham Technique Certification, Harge Dance Stories, The Seen, Movement Hive, Beads Byaree, and Detroit Clothing Circle.
This project is funded in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Harge Dance Stories.
